Abstract:
Optimization of the interface of a negative electrode in an electrochemical device comprising a negative electrode, electrolyte and a positive electrode. Optimization of the interface of a negative electrode in an electrochemical device comprising a negative electrode, electrolyte and a positive electrode, comprises: (a) forming an electrode structure by placing an electrolyte containing an onium salt of formula R 1>-C(=O)-N ->(R 2>). Z +> (I) between a negative electrode and a positive electrode; and (b) forming a passivation layer comprising a decomposition product of the electrolyte or salt on the surface of the negative electrode by applying a voltage between the negative electrode and the positive electrode so the potential of the negative electrode is -1 to -5V based on the potential relative to the reference electrode of I ->/I 3> ->. R 1>optionally substituted monovalent hydrocarbon group; R 2>a monovalent organic residue; Z +>monovalent cation. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a negative electrode where the interface is optimized; (2) an electrochemical device which has the negative electrode; (3) an onium salt (I); (4) the use of the onium salt as an electrolyte; (5) an electrolyte for a non-aqueous electrochemical device containing the onium salt.
