Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nematic organosiloxane useful for e.g. liquid crystal display, easy in synthesis and capable of being readily transformed into a nematic orientational state and of forming a transparent optical isomerism layer by introducing a plurality of mesogenic side groups at least any one of which comprises a specific group.
SOLUTION: This nematic organosiloxane comprises a plurality of mesogenic side groups in its molecule and, when referred to a 6-membered ring or 2 cyclic system comprising the 6-membered rings as a nucleus at most one of the groups comprises 3 nuclei; other groups each comprises 2 nuclei; and at least one of the groups comprises a (meth)acryl group. This compound comprises e.g. a plurality of units of formula I {R1 is an 1-10C hydrocarbon; M is a mesogenic side group of formula II [R2 is e.g. a group of the formula (CH2)n ((n) is 2 to 10); R3 is e.g. a group of the formula (CH2)m ((m) is 1 to 12); X1 is e.g. -O-; X2 is e.g. -COO-; A1 is e.g. 1,4-phenylene; A2 is e.g. H or a (meth)acryloyloxy; and (a) is 2 or 3]; and (p)=(q)=1 or (q)=1 at (p)=2}.
