Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a cationic polymer having amidine structural unit, having sufficient sizing effect on its addition in small amounts, and excellent in the setting function for neutral sizing agents.
CONSTITUTION: This setting agent, a cationic polymer, 0.1-10dl/g in the reduced viscosity at 25°C determined in the form of 1N saline solution at a concentration of 0.1g/dl, is made up of 20-90mol% of recurring unit of formula I and/or formula II (1R and R2 are each H or methyl; X- is an anion), 0-40mol% of recurring unit of formula III (R3 is a 1-4C alkyl), 0-70mol% of recurring unit of formula IV, and 0-70mol% of recurring unit of formula V. This polymer is obtained by amidination through reaction between the primary amino group and cyano group in a copolymer of a primary amino group-bearing ethylenic unsaturated monomer and a nitrile compound. Addition of this cationic polymer to a paper manufacturing stock slurry of pH 7.5-9.0 sets a sizing agent, and improves sizing effect.
