To obtain an alicyclic dicarboxylic acid diester having a new norbornane skeleton, useful as an intermediate raw material for polyester resins, etc., used for base, etc., of photographic film and having a new norbornane skeleton by using an inexpensive dicyclopentadiene as a raw material.
This new alicyclic compound is tetracyclo[7, 2, 0, 12.8 or 03.7]dodecane-10, 11-dicarboxylic acid represented by formula I (R1 and R2 are each independently H, a 1-6C alkyl, etc.) or its ester, e.g. dimethyltetracyclo[7, 2, 0, 12.8, 03.7]dodecane-10, 11-dicarboxylic acid or its diester. Tetracylo[7, 2, 0, 12.8, 03.7]-dodecane-4,10-diene-10,11-dicarboxylic acid of formula II or its diester is subjected to catalytic reduction due to hydrogen molecule using a metal catalyst to provide the objective compound of formula I.
