Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain an amorphous copolymer excellent in heat resistance, transparency, rigidity, etc., and moldability as well by copolymerizing a norbornadiene with a specified styrene derivative in the presence of a specified cationic polymerization catalyst above a specified temperature. CONSTITUTION:An amorphous copolymer having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.05-5dl/g as measured in decalin at 135 deg.C and a glass transition point Tg of 100 deg.C or above as measured by DSC and being soluble in hot toluene is obtained by copolymerizing a norbornadiene (A) (e.g. norbornadiene) with a styrene derivative (B) of the formula (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each H, hydrocarbyl, alkoxy, halohydrocarbyl or halogen) at a polymerization temperature of -80 deg.C or above in a monomer feed ratio of compound A to compound B of 10/90-75/25 (by mole) in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst prepared from a metal halide (e.g. ethylaluminum dichloride) and an active hydrogen compound (e.g. methanol) and/or an organo-halogen compound (e.g. sec-butyl chloride).
