Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a raw material and a synthetic intermediate for a polyimide or a polyamide utilized as a nonlinear optical material such as an optical waveguide and a wave length conversion element, a liquid crystal orientation membrane or the like. SOLUTION: The subject compound is a compound of a formula I [Ar<1> to Ar<3> are each an aromatic group (having substitution group on the aromatic ring); Y is nitro or amino], e.g. 2,4-bis(4-nitrophenoxy)azobenzene of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by carrying out a coupling reaction of a compound of formula III with a compound of the formula X-Ar<3> -Y (X is a halogen chosen from fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine) in the presence of a base in the solvent. For example, sodium hydride or the like is preferably used as the base. For example, N,N-dimethylformamide or the like is preferably used as the solvent.
