To obtain an association polymer which can increase the viscosity of aqueous solution by subjecting a nonionic ethylene monomer, an anionic and/or cationic monomer, a monomer having hydrophobic groups, and if necessary, a polyunsaturated monomer to reverse-phase micro-emulsion polymerization.
The nonionic ethylene monomer (A) used comprises, e.g. acrylamide. The anionic and/or cationic monomer (B) used comprises, e.g. acrylic acid and dimethylaminoethyl acrylate. An example of the monomer (C) having hydrophobic groups is an ethylene monomer represented by the formula (CH2- CH2-O)n-R (wherein R is a hydrophobic group containing at least 8 carbon atoms; and n is 6 or greater, preferably 8 to 55). The polyunsaturated monomer (D) used comprises a monomer containing at least two non-conjugated ethylenic double bonds. The total of component A and component B is 90-99.9 mol.%, the amount of component C is 0.1-10 mol.%, and the amount of component D is 0-0.2 mol.% based on the total monomers.
