PURPOSE: To obtain a new biphenyl compound useful as a cosmetic base and a medicine having effects on enhancement of antioxidizing effects and fixing properties of a perfume.
CONSTITUTION: The objective biphenyl compound expressed by the formula (R is 3-12C straight-chain and side-chain hydrocarbon). This new biphenyl compound expressed by the formula is obtained by converting guaiacol as a starting raw material into an alkyl ester derivative, then reacting the resultant alkyl ester derivative with aluminum chloride, providing a guiacyl alkyl ketone derivative and subsequently converting the resultant ketone derivative into a dimer. The new biphenyl derivative is used in an amount of preferably 0.01-5wt.% in its use as a antioxidant and preferably about 1-10wt.% in its use as a perfume fixative.
