Abstract:

To provide a method for selectively oxidizing alcohols into aldehydes or ketones under a mild condition which is required in an organic synthesis field or the other fields, particularly for oxidizing a hardly reacting 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-substituted ethanol in a short time in a high yield.

This method for selectively oxidizing alcohols is characterized by using, as an oxidizing agent, tris(p-substituted phenyl)bismuth dichlorides or tris(o,p-substituted phenyl)bismuth dichlorides having an electron-withdrawing group at least at para-position of a phenyl group.
