A compound of formula I {R1 is on of formula II to V [(m)=1-3; (n)=0, 1; A is a 4-9C straight chain or branched alkylene in which the branch to the main chain is methyl], etc.}, e.g. 2,2'-methylene-bis(3-methoxy-1,4- naphtoquinone). A compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by condensing (A) 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone with (B) an alkylaldehyde (R1CHO), an alkyldiethylacetal [R1CH(OEt)2] or an alkyldimethylacetal [R1CH(OCH3)2] in am amount of 1-5 mol equivalent based on the component A in (C) an organic solvent (e.g. dimethylformamide) at the ambient temperature or at a temperature near the boiling point of the component C or B, preferably 50-100°C.
