PURPOSE: To obtain a new carbazole derivative capable of exhibiting excellent antitumor effects and extremely useful as a carcinostatic agent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound expressed by formula I {R1 and R3 are H, halogen, NO2, methylenedioxy, NH2, OH, alkyl, aryl, etc.; Y is direct bond or alkylene; Z us OH, NR4R5 (R4 and R5 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, etc., or, together with bonded N, form nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group), etc.; either of parts (A and B) and (D and B) together forms oxo and the other, together with H, represents OH or together denote H or (A), (B), (D) and (E) are respectively H; group expressed by formula II is bound to the [2,3]-or [3,4]-position of the carbazole skeleton} and its salt, e.g. 2-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-1,2,3,6- tetrahydro-3-oxo-pyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazole. The compound expressed by formula I in which either of the parts (A and B) and (D and E) is oxo and the parts in the other are simultaneously H is obtained by reducing a compound expressed by formula III.
