PURPOSE: To obtain a new compd. useful as a liq. crystal having a relatively high clarifying point and a wide nematic phase and especially fit to application to a thin film transistor because of high specific resistance, low ionizable solubility and a relatively short switching time.
CONSTITUTION: This is a new compd. represented by formula I [where R is 1-12C alkyl, (n) is an integer of 2-7, a ring A is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4- phenylene, (m) is 0 or 1, a ring B is each group in the ring A or (N may be substd. for one CH group or two CH groups not adjacent to each other), in the case of m=1, trans-1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl, and each of Y1 and Y2 is a covalent bond or CH2CH2 and X is H, F or Cl], e.g. 1-chloro-4[trans-4-(5-methoxypentyl) cyclohexyl]benzene. When the compd. is the one represented by formula Ia or Ib [where (p) is an integer of 1-5], it is produced from a compd. represented III (where R is CH3) through a compd. represented by formula II or through compds. represented by formulae IV-V.
