Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a new compd. which is useful as a starting material for the production of p-cresol.
CONSTITUTION: This compd. is 4-methylcyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-diol-1-carboxylic acid. The compd. is obtd. by microbial conversion of p-xylene with Pseudomonas putida biotype-A strain. When the compd. is present in an aq. reaction medium and the acidity of the medium is controlled to about <3, the compd. is rapidly and spontaneously and quantitatively converted into p-cresol.
