To provide a molecule system achieving a volatile switch which averts chemical oxidation and/or reduction and can switch from a first state to a second state at a proper speed.
The molecule system is provided for a reversible electrical and optical switch on the scale of nanometers, particularly a field-driven molecular switch, in which a field-induced band gap is changed via the rotation of a rotor unit connected to a fixed stator unit. The molecule system has two branches on one side of a fixed junction unit and one or two branches on the opposite side. Thus, "Y" and "X" arrays are provided on the respective sides. The end of the branch opposite from the junction unit is connected to another molecule system or to a substrate, such as an electrode. Each rotor unit rotates between the two states, according to an externally applied electric field. A multiple stable molecular-mechanical device and field-driven optical switch can be obtained.
