Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A functional chain epichlorohydrin oligomer I (n is 2Wabout 30).

USE: Highly functional materials.

PROCESS: Epichlorohydrin is subjected to the ring-opening polymerization in the presence of a new planar tetracoordinative cobalt complex, preferably an optically active compound II, as a catalyst, most preferably in the presence of a catalyst system comprising the complex and an organoaluminum compound, e.g. triethylaluminum, etc., to give an oligomer I. The oligomer is useful as a functional material in a wide application field. For example, the reaction product of the oligomer with an amine is useful as cationic surface active agent, and various block and graft polymers can be synthesized by using the reactivity of the hydroxyl groups. The optically active material I is useful as an optical resolution agent and an intermediate for the preparation of resolution membranes, and the reactivity of the chlorine atom can be applied to the other uses.
