PURPOSE: To obtain new fungi having specific desired properties, and to provide a method for preparing the fungi and using the fungi for reducing the pitch content in a pulp timber.
CONSTITUTION: This new fungi for reducing pitch belong to the class of Ascomycotina and Deuteromycotina, and are related to an isolated ascospore comprising the ascospore having any of the following characteristics or a fungal strain including the ascospore: (1) characteristics affecting brightness of the wood substrate, sterilized substance after 21 days growth negatively to no greater extent than a referenced parent fungus while growing more virulently than on the parent on the same but non-sterile wood substrate as determined over a growth period of 10 days; (2) producing a higher brightness level or value on the sterilized substrate than the parent fungus after 2.1 days growth while growing substantially no less virulently than the parent on the non-sterilized substrate as determined over a growth period of 10 days.
