Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as an intermediate for producing a ceramide or its homolog which is an important constituent component of a ganglioside expected as a therapeutic agent for senility or as a carcinostatic agent.
CONSTITUTION: This new intermediate is a trans- or a cis-type compound expressed by formula I {X is N3 or NH2-NHCOR6 (R6 is an alkyl); R is cis or trans (CH2)nCH3 [(n) is 0-20]; Y and Y' are H, or Y and Y' together may form a substituted methylidene expressed by formula II (R1 and R2 are each methyl, either is phenyl and the other is H), with the proviso that X is N3 when both Y and Y' are H}, e.g. (2S,3R,4E)-2-azido-1,3-0-isopropyliden-4- octadecen-1,3-diol. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by passing, e.g. D-xylose or D-galactose as a starting substance through two steps, providing a compound expressed by formula III, passing the resultant compound expressed by formula III through compounds expressed by formulas IV and V, converting the compound expressed by formula III into an azide and affording a compound expressed by formula VI which is one of the compound expressed by formula I.
