To easily obtain a low-toxic new compound having neurocyte differentiation promoting action and useful as e.g. a therapeutic agent for central or peripheral nerve disorders.
This new compound is shown by formula I [A is a (substituted) 1-4C aliphatic hydrocarbon or the like; B is H or the like; X is O or the like; Y is a (substituted) 1-6C aliphatic hydrocarbon or the like; Z is carboxyl or the like; with a proviso that when A and B are linked to each other to form a cyclobutane ring, excepting the case that X is O, Y is methyl or the like, Z is methoxycarbonyl, or the like], e.g. 3-[(2R)-2-acetylamino-2- carboxyethylthio]methyl-4-oxo-1-n-pentanoic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reaction of a compound of formula II (U is an eliminable group; A', B' and Z' are A, B and Z where the functional groups may be protected, respectively) (e.g. 4-acetyl-γ-butyrolactone) with a compound of the formula HX2-Y' (X2 is S or the like; Y' is Y whose functional group may be protected) followed by, as necessary, deprotection.
