To provide a new light scattering type liquid crystal element which can be manufactured by a simple technique and has excellent characteristics such as very small switching hysteresis.
The liquid crystal optical element includes two sheets of substrate provided with a electrode layer, at least either of which is transparent, and a light control layer held between the substrates. The liquid crystal optical element can perform light switching which makes a light scattering state when a electric field is not applied, and a light transmission state when the electric field is applied. The light control layer is composed of low molecular weight liquid crystal, and a multi- domain which causes intense light scattering when the electric field is not applied is formed on the liquid crystal. As a particularly preferable embodiment, the low molecular weight liquid crystal which constitutes the light control layer is nematic liquid crystal, and an overcoat layer consisting of a polymer having a function to disturb the alignment of liquid crystal such as a fumaric acid diester resin is arranged adjacently to the light control layer. The liquid crystal optical element is manufactured by applying at least 30 times of electric field as large as the threshold electric field of the low molecular weight liquid crystal which constitutes the light control layer once or more, and then removing them.
