Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by the formula (n is positive integer; X-1 is halogen ion).
USE: A thermotropic liquid crystal substance and lyotropic liquid crystal forming substance.
PREPARATION: ω-Halogenoaliphatic carboxylic acid halide X(CH2)nCOX' (X is halogen is subjected to dehydrohalogenation reaction with cholesterol (5- cholestene-3-β-ol) in tert. amine solvent such as dimethylaniline to synthesize ω-halogenoaliphatic carboxylic acid cholesterol ester, which is then heated and melted as a mixed powder with 4,4'-bipyridine under reduced pressure and continued to heat until the melt is again solidified to provide the aimed compound.
