PURPOSE: To obtain a new macroago compound, containing plural azo groups having different decomposition activities in the molecule and useful as an initiator capable of readily and efficiently providing a block copolymer without requiring strict control.
CONSTITUTION: This macroazo compound is obtained by reacting (A) a compound having one azo group in one molecule and reactive functional groups at both terminals of the molecule with (B) a compound having one azo group in one molecule and reactivity with the reactive functional groups in the component (A). Furthermore, a dibasic acid of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, a lower alkyl or cyano; Y is a lower alkylene which may have interposing COO, O or CONH) as the component (A) is preferably reacted with a diol of formula II (R4 and R5 are each the fame as R1; Z is a lower alkylene which may have COO or CONH on the quaternary C side) as the component (B) in the presence of a basic catalyst such as triethylamine in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at 15-35°C for 0.5-8hr.
