To obtain the subject new compound useful as an intermediate for producing a ditrifluoro group-containing ester compound suitable as a component for a liquid crystal composition, comprising a specific optical active bistrifluoromethyl alcohol compound.
This compound is shown by formula I (A is an organic group; carbon with (*) is an asymmetric carbon) such as a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by adding an ether to 1,1,1,3,3,4,4,4-octafluoro-2-butanol, then dripping n-hexyllithium, raising the temperature, stirring the reaction mixture, esterifying the compound with benzoyl chloride, purifying the reaction product by silica gel chromatography to give a crude product, then vigorously stirring the crude product with Pd-C and ethyl acetate, then filtering the reaction solution under reduced pressure by a glass filter laid with celite, after concentration under reduced pressure, purifying the resulting substance by silica gel chromatography to give a benzyl ester compound and reducing the compound with lithium aluminum in an ether.
