PURPOSE: To produce 14α-hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione useful, e.g. as a raw material for synthesis of a hormone in a high yield by culturing a microorganism belonging to Myrothecium and capable of hydroxylating 4-androstene-3,17- dione in the presence of this compound and subsequently collecting the product.
CONSTITUTION: A microorganism [e.g. Myrothecium striatisporum NK-928461 strain (Bikoken stipulation No.13175), etc.] belonging to Myrothecium and capable of synthesizing 14α-hydroxy-4-androstene-3,1 7-dione by hydroxylation of 4-androstene-3,17-dione is inoculated in a culture medium containing 4- androstene-3,17-dione and cultured according to the aeration agitation method at 27°C for 5 day. The cultured solution is subsequently subjected to centrifugal separation so as to separate the cell bodies and the separated cell bodies are extracted with methanol. The extracted solution is concentrated under a reduced pressure and the concentrated solution is extracted with dichloromethane. The obtained dichloromethane extract is concentrated to dryness, thus producing the objective 14α-hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione useful, e.g. as a raw maternal for synthesis of a hormone.
