NEW MATERIAL:An optically active 3-[6(S)-2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexan-1-yl] propanol derivative expressed by formula I (R1 is lower alkyl).
USE: An amber aroma-providing agent.
PREPARATION: 1-Methoxycitronellal expressed by formula II is allowed to react with acetic anhydride and then cyclized using a phosphoric acid catalyst to give a compound expressed by formula III, which is then made to react with triethyl phosphonoacetate to synthesize a compound expressed by formula IV. The compound expressed by formula IV is reduced with sodium borohydride, then oxidized with MnO2 and hydrogenated in the presence of Pd-C to provide a compound (new substance) expressed by formula V, which is then reacted with an alkylmagnesium halide expressed by the formula R1MgX to produce the compound expressed by formula I.
