To obtain a new polynucleotide having a high identity to a nucleic acid encoding an rpoA polypeptide containing a specific amino acid sequence and useful for the screening of antibacterial compounds, treatment, diagnosis, etc., of bacterial infections with the genus Streptocccus.
This new isolated polynucleotide comprises a polynucleotide having at least 70% identity to a polynucleotide encoding a polypetide comprising an amino acid sequence represented by the formula, a polynucleotide having at least 70% identity to a polynucleotide encoding the same mature polypeptide as that expressed by an rpoA gene contained in Streptococcus pneumoniae of a deposited strain, etc., and is useful for the screening of antibacterial compounds, treatment, diagnosis, etc., of infections with the Streptococcus pneumoniae. The polynucleotide is obtained by probing a chromosomal DNA library of the Streptococcus pneumoniae with a labeled oligonucleotide derived from a partial sequence.
