PURPOSE: To provide the new compound having an action to inhibit the contraction of smooth muscle by carbachol, little in adverse actions and useful as a highly safe anticonvulsant.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula (R1 is 1-6C alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, carboxyl; R2 is H, 1-5C alkyl, aryl, carbamoylalkyl, etc.; R3, R4 are H, 1-6C alkyl, etc.), e.g. (3R,5S)-1-ethyl-5-methoxycarbonylspiro[pyrrolidine-3,5'- imidazolidine]-2',4'-dione. The compound of the formula is obtained by converting hydrogen atom at the 1-position and/or the carboxyl group into various functional groups while holding the absolute configuration at the 2-position of L-hydroxyproline, converting the hydroxyl group into a ketone group, and subsequently forming the hydantoin ring of an amino carboxylic acid group from the ketone group.
