To obtain a new subject sugar derivative expressing strong selectin dependent anti-inflammatory action, excellent in stability and safety and useful as an anti-inflammatory agent, etc., and obtained by condensing a sugar having an eliminable group with an alcohol and succeedingly sulfating or phosphating after the condensation.
This new sulfated or phosphated sugar derivative (or its salt) is expressed by formula I [R1 is H, a sulfuric acid ester, a phosphoric acid ester or L-fucose; R2 to R4 are each H, a sulfuric acid ester or a phosphoric acid ester; (l) is 0 or 1; (m) is 0-15 integer; (n) is 0-21 integer]. (e.g. 2- methylpropyl-D-garactopyranoside 3-sulfate, etc.), exhibits strong selectin- dependent anti-inflammatory action, is excellent in safety and preservation stability and useful for curing and preventing ARDS, sepsis, rheumatism, shock and nephritis. The compound is obtained by reacting a sugar of formula II (X is an eliminable group; Ac is acetyl) with a compound of formula III, then eliminating protecting groups and sulfating or phosphating hydroxyl groups.
