PURPOSE: To provide a new sulfuric acid ester of a sugar alcohol which exhibits inhibitory activities against migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells of the vascular wall and can be employed for the therapy and/or prophylaxis of arteriosclerotic changes.
CONSTITUTION: There are provided a compound of the formula [wherein A is a residue of a sugar alcohol or of a derivative thereof which lacks 1-hydroxy, or tris-(hydroxymethyl)methyl residue with at least one OH of the residue A being esterified with sulfuric acid; X is NR1CO (wherein R1 is H, a lower alkyl or hydroxy-lower alkyl), NHCONH, NHCSNH, NHSO2, NR1 or O; m and p are each 0 or 1; and B is a conjugated multiple bond system] and a salt thereof, e.g. bis-(2,3,4,5,6-penta-O-sulfo-D-glucit-1-ylamide) (E)-stilbene-4,4'-dicarboxylate decasodium salt. The compound is obtained by reacting the corresponding non- sulfated compound with a sulfating agent.
