PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compounds useful as a treating and preventing medicament for diseases associated with regulation of smooth muscle contraction such as cardiovacular or respiratory systems, especially as a treating and preventing medicament for hypertension and asthma by using specific tetralones as a starting substance.
CONSTITUTION: The tetralones are represented by formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl(thio)(carbonyl), hydroxy, a 1-4C alkoxy, formyl or the like; R3 and R4 are each a 1-4C alkyl or, together, form a 2-5C polymethylene chain; R5 is H and R6 is H, hydroxy, a 1-4C alkoxy or R5 is hydroxy and R6 is H or R5 and R6, together with a ring carbon, form a bond or a group represented by formula II; R7 is 2-, 3- or 4-pyridyl]. Specifically, 6-bromo-1,2 -dihydro-2,2-dimethyl -4-(N-oxido-2-pyridyl)naphthalene-1-one or the like is obtained by passing a compound, represented by formula III and used as a starting substance through a reaction thereof through a compound represented by the formula R7'-X (R7' is R7; X is Cl or the like) in the presence of a base such as butyl-lithium in a solvent such as diethyl ether.
