PURPOSE: To produce a nickel-carrying catalyst being a highly active catalyst for reforming methane in substitution for an industrially expensive metal carring catalyst by mixing a nickel salt, or the like, with a carrier containing silicon, or the like, and sintering them after decomposing the metal salt while melting the salt.
CONSTITUTION: For producing the catalyst, at first, a nickel salt having a low melting point lower than 100°C, and if necessary, an alkaline metal salt and/or an alkaline earth metal salt, are mixed physically at room temperature with a silicon having a surface area less than 100 m2/g and/or a support containing aluminum. Next, by heating to a certain temperature higher than a melting point of the mixed salt, the metal salts are decomposed by melting all of the salts. Then, it is sintered in the range of 300-1,200°C. Carbon dioxide, steam, oxygen, and the like, are utilized as an oxidizing agent. By this process, a drying process becomes unnecessary and a problem of wastewater is solved and a nickel carrying catalyst being a highly active catalyst for reforming methane in substitution for an industrially expensive metal carring catalyst is obtained.
