Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a high utilization factor in a nickel hydroxide electrode used as the positive electrode of an alkaline storage battery. SOLUTION: In a nickel hydroxide electrode for an alkaline storage battery using nickel hydroxide as a main active material, secondary particles formed of the aggregate of primary particles are used as nickel hydroxide particles. The movement of electrolyte penetrated into gaps between the primary particles of the nickel hydroxide is limited by the primary particles of the nickel hydroxide in the surroundings thereof, the electrolyte in the gaps in diluted with water (H2 O) produced by charging, and its pH value lowers so that oxygen generation overvoltage rises. Utilizing the oxidization of the nickel hydroxide up to a higher order (> trivalent) oxidation state, the nickel hydroxide electrode of a high utilization factor is formed.
