Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nickel positive electrode for an alkaline storage battery, which is high in discharge voltage, develops a high utilization factor upon large current discharging (with excellent large current discharging characteristics) and develops a high utilization factor upon high temperature charging, and an alkaline storage battery.
SOLUTION: For the nickel positive electrode comprising, as a main component, a positive active material which is nickel hydroxide containing at least magnesium in a state of a solid solution, and in which the content of magnesium is not lower than 2 mol% to not higher than 7 mol% based on all metal elements in nickel hydroxide, the active material is powder having a tap density of at least 1.9 g/cc, a half width of a peak in a (101) plane situated near 2θ=37-40° in X-ray diffraction using CuKα-rays falls within a range of 0.7-1.2, and a sulfate group contained in crystals is 0.5% by weight or less, the positive electrode contains oxide powder containing at least one selected from the group consisting of Y, Yb, Lu, Ti and Ca, and at least sodium hydroxide is contained in an electrolyte.
