To utilize a desk as a writing desk, etc., as necessary by setting the lowered position of an elevating and lowering device to be at a height at which a shelf board is hidden and an elevated position to be at a height position where access from outside to the shelf board is possible.
A first stopper is provided with a chuck main body 14a and a body to be chucked 14b and a second stopper 15 is set so that the shelf board 7 comes to the height position of a side board and a front board when the top plate 2 is at the elevated position. Concerning a night table 1, this first stopper is engaged at the lowered position and the board 7 is not seen from outside because of being hidden in a frame body consisting of the back board 3, the side board and the front board when the plate 2 is at the lowered position. At the time of pressurizing the plate 2 from an upper side by prescribed force at this position, the first stopper is disengaged and the plate 2 is elevated by the energizing force of a coil spring 12. When the plate 2 reaches to the elevated position, the second stopper 15 operates to stop elevating of the plate 2 to hold a standstill state at the elevated position. The board 7 is seen from outside and becomes accessable to function as a hidden shelf.
