Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain an unknown non-macrolide compound which is useful as an antitumor agent due to its cytocidal effect against tumor cells.
CONSTITUTION: 2-(4-Methyl-1,4-pentadienyl)-3,5-dimethyl-5-(5,7,8-trihydroxy-3- methyl-1-octen-2-yl)methyloxolane. This compound is obtained by collecting a spiral flagellum algae, Amphidinium sp., symbiotic to Amphiscolops in Polycladida, and effecting volume culture in the medium prepared by adding 1% of marine water nutrient enhancer of Provasoli (ES) to sterilized marine water, adding the solvent to the collected algae to effect extraction and by isolating and purifying the extract using silica-gel column chromatography and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography.
