PURPOSE: To provide the subject fiber which has a specified property and a highly oriented fibril structure useful as an alternative fiber of asbestos, pulp for papermaking and the like by extruding a molten semi-crystal phase consisting of a specified acrylonitrile homo polymer and the like and a specific amount of water.
CONSTITUTION: A molten semi-crystal phase consisting of (A) an acrylonitrile homopolymer or a copolymer, the acrylonitrile homopolymer or the copolymer having a viscosity average molecular weight of 10,000 to 600,000 (preferably 50,000 to 350,000), obtained by polymerizing (i) a ≥70 w.t.% (preferably a ≥80 w.t.%) acrylonitrile and (ii) a ≤30 w.t.% (preferably a ≤15 w.t.%) copolymerizable monomers and (B) a 5-100 w.t.% water to the polymers, is extruded. An objective fiber of highly oriented fibrils structure having a cross- sectional structure in which platen fibrils are laminated, a fiber structure and a ≥70% degree of orientation based on a X-ray analysis, a 0.1 to 100 μm thickness distribution and 0.1-100 mm length distribution is obtained.
