Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a nonlinear optical material having a significant second harmonic generating effect and satisfactory machineability by preparing a copolymer of two kinds of specified vinyl compds. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer of vinyl compds. represented by formulae I, II is prepd. In the formulae I, II, each of X1-X4 is a donor or acceptor type substituent, X1 and X2, and X3 and X4 form pairs of donor and acceptor type substituents, at least one of X3 and X4 is an optically active group, n is an integer, X1 and X2 enhance the secondary nonlinearity of the crystals of the copolymer and X3 and X4 destroy the reversal symmetry of the crystals of the copolymer and produce secondary nonlinearity. The mechanical strength of the crystals of the copolymer is enhanced because the vinyl compds. are copolymerized. An org. nonlinear optical material having a significant second harmonic generating effect and superior machinability can be obtd.
