To prevent unauthorized use of data to attain security protection by automatically erasing data stored in a nonvolatile memory, and further to perform the erasing of data only when the data is to be erased, regardless of the data amount stored.
The device includes a means 11 which detects attachment and detachment to an information processing apparatus, and a timing means 12 which starts timing upon detection of detachment. When the attachment is detected, the timing means 12 is temporarily stopped, and an identification code preliminarily stored in the information processing apparatus is read, and it is determined whether the identification code is matched to a valid identification code. When mismatching of the identification code is determined, the rest of timing operation is started. An erasing instruction is given with completion of the timing operation for a predetermined time by the timing means 12 as a trigger, and the storage content of a memory part 16 is erased by an erasing means 15.
