Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prepare a high-mol.-wt. norbornene polymer excellent in mechanical properties, heat resistance, transparency, etc., by polymerizing a norbornene monomer in the presence of a catalyst comprising a combination of a transition metal compd. with an organometallic compd. CONSTITUTION:A norbornene monomer of formula II is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst mainly comprising a transition metal compd. component contg. a transition metal of the groups IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII of the periodic table and an aluminoxane component to give a norbornene polymer mainly comprising repeating units of formula I and having a wt.-average mol.wt. (measured by gel permeation chromatography) of 10<4> or higher. In formulas I and II, R<1> to R<12> may be the same or different and are each H, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, or a group having a halogen, oxygen, or nitrogen atom; R<5> and R<7> may combine with each other to form a ring; and n is an integer of 0 or above.
