PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency and the precision of precision check for a thermocouple and improve the break-out(BO) detection precision.
CONSTITUTION: A normality and abnormality judging method for thermocouples for molds in a continuous casting facility to determine whether respective thermocouples 1 are normal or abnormal involves the following processes; dividing a plurality of thermocouples 1 installed in molds 11-14 into groups corresponding to the sections of respective molds, connecting respective thermocouple groups with an electromotive force measuring apparatus 2 through connectors 21-24, measuring electromotive force by heating the thermocouples 1 installed in the molds 11-14, and at the same time, converting the measured electromotive force into temperature value, and carrying out judgment based on the difference from a previously obtained standard value for each thermocouple and the tendency value to the thermocouple groups. After the fluctuation value of a single thermocouple, or thermocouple groups, or all of the thermocouples is kept within ±5°C and the increasing and decreasing temperature curve of a thermocouple is kept within 3°C as a value converted into temperature, casting is carried out, and the time when the temperature of thermocouples in the upper stages rises by 5°C or more to the measurement peak value and the temperature of thermocouples in the lower stages corresponding to the upper stages rises by 5°C or more following the former rise is determined to be BO by a BO detecting method.
