To provide a normally black mode TN liquid crystal display device which has wide viewing angle characteristics and little asymmetry in the lateral viewing angles when a medium tone is displayed and which can display an image of high quality.

The device has an optical compensation film and an optically anisotropic film disposed between a driving liquid crystal cell and a polarizing plate in the observation side. The optical compensation film holds twisted nematic alignment and has the twist angle smaller than the twist angle of a nematic liquid crystal layer of the driving liquid crystal cell when no voltage is applied.
