NEW MATERIAL:The title compound of formula I (R1 is H, lower alkylcarbonyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, etc.; R2 is phenyl which may be substituted by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, etc., or naphthyl).
EXAMPLE: N-(1'-p-methylphenoxy-2',2',2'-trichloroethyl)-2-hydroxybenzamide.
USE: Soil disinfectant having an excellent effect even at a low concentration especially on clubroot of cruciferous crops. Low toxicity, and no irritative odor.
PROCESS: A compound of formula IV (R1 of formula I is acetyl) is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a halogenating agent to form a compound of formula III (X is halogen), followed by the reaction with a compound of formula R2OH. Hydrolysis of the compound of formula IV in the presence of an acid catalyst yields a compound of formula V (when R1 of formula I is H).
