To obtain the subject novel compound that is useful as a catalyst or a component in a catalyst system used in a phase transition reaction, particularly in a halogen-fluorine exchanging reaction with low toxicity to skin, can attain the results equal to or superior to the ones that are attained in the case wherein a tetrakis (dietylamino)phosphonium bromide is employed as a catalyst.
The objective compound is represented by formula I [one to three of R1-R4 are each a group of formula II, or the like, and the residue is a group of formula III, or the like; X- is an inorganic or organic anion, or the like], typically bis(2-methoxyethyl)-aminotris(pyrrolidino)phosphonium chloride. The compound of formula I is prepared by allowing a phosphorus pentahalide (preferably phosphors pentachloride) to react with a halide to be exchanged, for example, 1-6 moles of a group of formula II per one equivalent amount of a halogen to be exchanged, then allowing the reaction product to react with a compound of formula IV in an amount of 1-10 moles per one equivalent amount of the halogen to be exchanged.
