NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula [R1 is halogen or -OR2(R2 is H or lower alkanoyl)].

EXAMPLE: 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12-Hexahydro-5,12-dioxo-6,11-diol-7,9-cis-diol-9-bromoacetylnaphthacene.

USE: An intermediate for preparing 4-desmethoxyadriamycin, a carcinostatic agent, etc.

PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula II is halogenated so that -CH3 is converted into -CH2X(X is halogen), and the compound is reacted with a compound of R2OH or its metal salt, to give a compound shown by the formula III.
