NEW MATERIAL:An antibiotic, botryticidin A, with following physical, chemical and biological properties: C 53.34%, H 7.55%, O 14.77%, N 24.32%; molecular weight: 6400 (measured by aminoacid analysis); [α]D25: +1.1° (c=0.02, in 0.8M sodium chloride solution); readily soluble in water, hard soluble in methanol, ethyl acetate, ether, chloroform, benzen; positive to biuret and ninhydrin reactions and negative to Folin reaction; basic; white amorphous powder; the crude product is stable in a sodium chloride solution of more than 0.6M at room temperature. The purified product loses the antibacterial activities when desalted, but is stable in the above sodium chloride solution at a temperature even above 100°C.
USE: Antibacterial for agriculture and horticulture: they show effectiveness on rice blast disease, cucumba gray mold, pear black spot and grape ripe rot.
PREPARATION: For example, a mold of Bacillus such as Bacillus substilis AJ1316 (FERM-5154) is cultured to give the substance.
