NEW MATERIAL:An antibiotic having the following properties. Appearance: colorless amorphous powder, specific rotatory power: [α]20D+31.1° (c=0.74, methanol), Rf value of thin layer chromatography of silica gel 60F254:0.67 [developing solvent chloroform-methanol- 14% ammonia water (7:3:2) bottom layer], solubility: easily soluble in methanol, soluble in pyridine, slightly soluble in ethyl acetate, chloroform or acetone, and insoluble in n-hexane, benzene, or water, positive in ninhydrin reaction, positive in red prussiate-ferric chloride reaction.
USE: An antibacterial agent.
PROCESS: A bacterium (FERM-P 4376) belonging to the genus Streptoverticillium, capable of producing piperazinomycin, is cultivated in a nutritive medium, and piperazinomycin is produced, accumulated, and collected.
