NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is alkyl; Y1-Y6 are each H, alkyl, alkoxy or halogen).
EXAMPLE: 2-Methyl-1,2-dihydro-2,2,-biqninolyl.
USE: Useful as a photosensitizer, chelating agent, base catalyst, etc.; or as an intermediate for various kinds of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, etc.
PREPARATION: The objective compound of the formula I can be obtained by reaction between a biquinolyl of formula II and a Grignard reagent of formula RMgX (X is halogen) in an aprotic solvent (e.g. diethyl ether) at room temperature for several to several tens minutes. Equimolar or somewhat excess amount of the Grignard reagent, based on the biquinolyl, is used. Alternatively, the present compound can also be obtained by reaction between a 2-quinolylsulfoxide of formula III (R1 is alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl) and two molar times or more of the Grignard reagent mentioned above.
