PURPOSE: To provide carbon black which has a high degree of graphitization, is highly porous and excellent in physical and chemical stabilities and has a specified crystalline structure when determined by X-ray diffraction and a specified specific surface area as measuered by BET method.
CONSTITUTION: By-product carbon black having a DBP oil absorption of 220ml/ 100g or above and an ash content of 0.3wt% or below obtd. by partially oxidizing a liquid hydrocarbon (e.g. carbon oil) with molecular oxygen in the presence of steam in a quantity of 200W800kg per ton of hydrocarbon at 1,200W1,450°C under a pressure of 10W80kg/cm2, is dried at 300W900°C in an N2 gas atmosphere for 0.5W3hr and then heated at 1,000W3,000°C in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain carbon black having a specific surface area of 100m2/g or above as measured by BET method and a crystalline structure wherein La is 20W250, Lc is 20W250 and d(002) is 3.55W3.35 when determined by X-ray diffraction.
