Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL: A compound of formula I [R1 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R is Ar or Ar1; Ar is 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl or 5-methylthiophen-2-yl; Ar1 is formula II (A is phenyl and R2 is 1-6C alkyl, A is 4-methoxyphenyl and R2 is H or 1-6C alkyl, or A is 2-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl and R2 is H.)].
EXAMPLE: Methyl 4,6-O-(4-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylidene)glucopyranoside.
USE: Sustained flavorants for tobacco products and flavor additives to microwaveable foods.
PROCESS: A pyranoside of formula III (R1 is H or 1-2C alkyl) and ethylvanillin of formula IV are reacted in a solvent (preferably DMF) in the presence of an acid catalyst (preferably p-toluenesulfonic acid) and a dehydrating agent (preferably trimethyl orthoformate).
