NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R and R1 are alkyl; X is O or COO; A and B are single bond, COO or OCO; Y is OCO or COOCH2).
EXAMPLE: 4'-Octyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid-4-(2-trifluoromethyl-2- fluorohexanoyloxy)phenyl.
USE: A liquid crystal material exhibiting a highly excellent effect as a raw material for optoelectronics-relating elements utilizing liquid crystals and electrochemichromism because the compound of formula I can form a stable thermotropic liquid crystal state and gives a ferrodielectric liquid crystal having a large spontaneous polarization and a large response rate.
PREPARATION: Compounds of formula II and III (l is 1; m=0 or 1; n=1 or 2; n+m+l=3; A is single bond; B is COO; Y is OCO) are reacted with each other to prepare a compound of formula IV, which is reacted with a compound of formula V to provide a compound of formula I' corresponding to the above- mentioned raw materials.
