Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable field emission element which is easily manufacture, high in efficiency, able to form a uniform electron beam, and capable of reducing the possibility of spark discharges and a dielectric breakdowns.
SOLUTION: An emitter layer 106 is a resistive material, equipped with a side end part 120 having an edge part 122, and a spacer layer 104 is present only on a part of the emitter layer. A gate layer 102 on the spacer layer has a taper-shaped side end part and forms a wedge 129 at its edge part. An element is used in a flat panel display device having a screen 124, and the screen 124 is at a positive voltage and disposed above the gate layer 102. When a potential difference is applied between the emitter layer 106 and the gate layer 102, electrons are emitted from the edge part of the emitter layer and attracted to the screen. The wedge makes the quantity of electrons flocking to the gate to be reduced and enhances efficiency of the element. Because the emitter layer is resistive, uniformity of electrons emitted along the edge part of the emitter layer is improved.
